Zakat Calculator — FAQ

What is the nisab for gold and silver?+
The gold nisab is 87.48 grams, approximately 7.5 tola. The silver nisab is 612.36 grams, approximately 52.5 tola. If your zakatable wealth meets or exceeds one of these thresholds and has been held for a full lunar year, Zakat becomes due.
Should I use the gold nisab or the silver nisab?+
Because silver is far cheaper, the silver nisab produces a much lower threshold, meaning more people qualify. Many scholars recommend using it when wealth is a mixture of assets, since it results in more being distributed. Your local scholar may advise differently for your circumstances.
How much Zakat is payable?+
The rate is 2.5% of total zakatable wealth, payable once the nisab threshold is met and the wealth has been held for one full lunar year, known as the hawl.
Is Zakat due on jewellery I wear?+
Scholarly positions differ on jewellery held for personal use. The majority position treats gold and silver as zakatable regardless of form. This calculator applies that majority position, but you should confirm with a qualified scholar.
What else counts as zakatable wealth?+
Cash in hand and in bank accounts, business inventory and trade goods at market value, and receivables you reasonably expect to collect. Your home, personal vehicle, clothing and tools of trade are generally excluded.

What is nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold before Zakat becomes obligatory. There are two recognised thresholds:

  • Gold nisab — 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold ≈ Rs 3,522,350 today
  • Silver nisab — 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver ≈ Rs 376,092 today

Because silver is far cheaper, the silver nisab produces a lower threshold, meaning more people qualify. Many scholars recommend using the silver nisab when your wealth is a mixture of assets, as it benefits recipients. Your local scholar may advise differently for your circumstances.

The rate is 2.5%

If your zakatable wealth meets or exceeds nisab and has been in your possession for one full lunar year (hawl), Zakat is due at 2.5% of the total.

What counts as zakatable wealth?

  • Gold and silver in any form, including jewellery (per the majority position)
  • Cash in hand, bank balances and savings
  • Business inventory and trade goods valued at market price
  • Receivables you reasonably expect to collect

Your home, personal car, clothing and tools of trade are generally not zakatable. Outstanding debts that are due can typically be deducted.
